Where is San Mateo County?

San Mateo County takes up most of the San Francisco Peninsula. It is bordered by San Francisco County to the North, Alameda County to the East and Santa Clara County to the South. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the County has a total area of 741 square miles, 449 square miles being land and the rest water. It is among the top 20 most affluent counties in the United States in terms of personal, per capita and household income. A few of our cities, Belmont, Foster City and Hillsoborough have been named to Forbes’ Best Towns to Live Well.

Why is San Mateo County so Expensive?

Several large corporations, such as EA, Sony, Oracle, Gilead, Genentech and Amgen all have campuses in San Mateo County providing a solid job base for its residents. Combine the job base with the acute shortage of buildable land and you will start to understand why San Mateo County real estate has appreciated better than many other counties in the state.

What is There to Do?

Residents enjoy the proximity to outdoor activities with hiking and biking trails, snow skiing only 3 hours away and lakes within about an hour and a half’s drive. San Mateo County is an easy drive into San Francisco for the shows, restaurants and tourist attractions.

What About the Weather?

The weather in San Mateo County is usually very moderate. With no extreme winters or summers, temperatures usually range in the high 50s and low 60s in the morning to mid 70s and low 80s during the day. It is always a good idea to dress in layers, especially if traveling to San Francisco. When the wind picks up, the air can get pretty chilly, even in mid-July and August as many tourists with San Francisco fleece jackets on Fisherman’s Wharf have learned. If you prefer warmer weather, try one of the Southern Cities in the County like Redwood City, Menlo Park and Atherton. If you prefer cooler weather, head up to Pacifica, Daly City, Half Moon Bay and even the hills of Belmont where the fog sits and provides a blanket of relief on a hot summer day.
